Is giving an offering a commandment of Jesus Christ?
Why, and for what purpose, would Jesus Christ command that we give offerings?
Did the Lord Jesus Christ or His disciples receive offerings?
Are you living according to the Word of God in this area?
I know that for some this is a confusing topic that they resist, perhaps because they have seen false prophets with airplanes living for the flesh, or maybe they feel some church took advantage of them, or they've heard so many things against giving offerings, and others simply out of ignorance because they don't know the Word of God, and some because they have a poor relationship with money.
Is giving an offering a commandment of Jesus Christ?
Matthew 10:41-42 He who receives a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet's reward, and he who receives a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man's reward. 42 And whoever gives one of these little ones only a cup of cold water to drink in the name of a disciple, truly I say to you, he shall by no means lose his reward.
Luke 10:5-7 Whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace to this house.’ Luk 10:6 And if a son of peace is there, your peace will rest on it; if not, it will return to you. Luk 10:7 And remain in the same house, eating and drinking what they give you, for the laborer is worthy of his wages. Do not go from house to house. 1
Corinthians 9:14 So also the Lord has commanded that those who proclaim the gospel should live from the gospel.
Gal 6:6-8 The one who is taught the word should share all good things with the one who instructs him. Gal 6:7 Do not be deceived; God is not mocked, for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. Gal 6:8 For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life.
1 Timothy 5:18 For the Scripture says, YOU SHALL NOT MUZZLE AN OX WHILE IT TREADS OUT THE GRAIN, and, The laborer is worthy of his wages.
Luke 6:38 Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over, will be put into your bosom; for with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you.
Mar_9:41 And whoever gives you a cup of water to drink in My name, because you belong to Christ, truly I say to you, he will by no means lose his reward.
1Co 16:1-3 Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given orders to the churches of Galatia, so you must do also. 1Co 16:2 On the first day of the week let each one of you lay something aside, storing up as he may prosper, so that no collections have to be made when I come. 1Co 16:3 And when I arrive, whomever you approve by your letters I will send to bear your gift to Jerusalem.
Why, and for what purpose, would Jesus Christ command that we give offerings?
Giving is necessary to sustain operating expenses and to support the men and women who serve, to obtain what is needed for the advancement and growth of the congregation, for travel expenses, among other things.
1 Corinthians 9:7-14 Who ever goes to war at his own expense? Who plants a vineyard and does not eat of its fruit? Or who tends a flock and does not drink of the milk of the flock? 1Co 9:8 Do I say these things as a mere man? Or does not the law say the same also? 1Co 9:9 For it is written in the law of Moses, You shall not muzzle an ox while it treads out the grain. Is it oxen God is concerned about, 1Co 9:10 or does He say it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written, that he who plows should plow in hope, and he who threshes in hope should be partaker of his hope. 1Co 9:11 If we have sown spiritual things for you, is it a great thing if we reap your material things? 1Co 9:12 If others are partakers of this right over you, are we not even more? Nevertheless we have not used this right, but endure all things, lest we hinder the gospel of Christ. 1Co 9:13 Do you not know that those who work in sacred things eat from the temple, and those who serve at the altar partake of the offerings of the altar? 1Co 9:14 Even so the Lord has commanded that those who preach the gospel should live from the gospel.
2 Co 9:1-5 Now concerning the ministering to the saints, it is superfluous for me to write to you; 2Co 9:2 for I know your willingness, about which I boast of you to the Macedonians, that Achaia was ready a year ago; and your zeal has stirred up the majority. 2Co 9:3 Yet I have sent the brethren, lest our boasting of you should be in vain in this respect, that, as I said, you may be ready; 2Co 9:4 lest if some Macedonians come with me and find you unprepared, we (not to say you) should be ashamed of this confident boasting. 2Co 9:5 Therefore I thought it necessary to exhort the brethren to go to you ahead of time and prepare beforehand your generosity that had been promised before, that it may be ready as a matter of generosity and not as something forced.
Did the Lord Jesus Christ or His disciples receive offerings?
Mat_20:28 just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.
Joh 12:6 This he said, not that he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief, and had the money box, and used to take what was put in it.
Php 4:15-17 Now you Philippians know also that in the beginning of the gospel, when I departed from Macedonia, no church shared with me concerning giving and receiving but you only. Php 4:16 For even in Thessalonica you sent aid once and again for my necessities. Php 4:17 Not that I seek the gift, but I seek the fruit that abounds to your account.
Mat 16:26 For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?
Mar_12:14 When they had come, they said to Him, Teacher, we know that You are true, and care about no one, for You do not regard the person of men, but teach the way of God in truth. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not? Shall we pay, or shall we not pay?
2Co 9:6-13 But this I say: He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. 2Co 9:7 So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity, for God loves a cheerful giver. 2Co 9:8 And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance for every good work; 2Co 9:9 as it is written: He has dispersed abroad, He has given to the poor; His righteousness endures forever. 2Co 9:10 Now may He who supplies seed to the sower, and bread for food, supply and multiply the seed you have sown and increase the fruits of your righteousness, 2Co 9:11 while you are enriched in everything for all liberality, which causes thanksgiving through us to God. 2Co 9:12 For the administration of this service not only supplies the needs of the saints, but also is abounding through many thanksgivings to God, 2Co 9:13 while, through the proof of this ministry, they glorify God for the obedience of your confession to the gospel of Christ, and for your liberal sharing with them and with all.
1 Corinthians 13:3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing.
