How to Put On the Armor of God Each Day
Six pieces, and not one of them is a ritual. What Paul describes is a character to live in, put on by faith each morning.

Ephesians 6 is often taught as a morning routine you recite. Read closely, it is something plainer and harder: six things that are true of Jesus, which you are asked to wear.
Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.
Ephesians 6:13The belt of truth
Truth first, because everything else hangs on it. This is not only doctrinal truth but honesty — with God about where you actually are, and with yourself about what you have actually done. Most of what troubles a believer at night loses its grip in daylight.
The breastplate of righteousness
Not the righteousness you have produced. The breastplate is Christ’s righteousness given to you, and it covers the place accusation aims at. When you are told you are disqualified, this is the answer.
Shoes of the gospel of peace
Footwear is about where you can go and how steadily you stand. A believer at peace with God can walk into a difficult room without needing it to go well.
The shield of faith
Faith is not certainty about outcomes. It is trust in a Person when the outcome is unknown. That is what stops an accusation from landing.
The helmet of salvation
The helmet guards your thinking. A great deal of spiritual struggle is a settled question being reopened: am I really His? Salvation is the answer, and it is God’s to give, not yours to feel your way into.
The sword of the Spirit
The one offensive piece, and it is Scripture. Worth noticing: when Jesus was tempted, He did not rebuke at length. He quoted the Bible three times and that was the end of it.
So what does putting it on look like?
- Read a little Scripture before you read anything else.
- Tell God the truth about your day before you ask Him for anything.
- When accusation comes, answer it with what is true rather than arguing with it.
- Keep short accounts — forgive quickly, apologize quickly.
- Pray through the day rather than only at the start of it.
Key takeaways
- Every piece of the armor is something true about Jesus, not a technique.
- Truth comes first, and it includes being honest about yourself.
- The one offensive weapon is Scripture — used simply, as Jesus used it.
- Missing a morning does not leave you exposed. The armor is a Person.
A prayer
Father, today I want to live in what is true. Cover me with the righteousness of Jesus, guard my thinking, and give me peace I did not manufacture. When I am accused, remind me what You have said. Amen.
Practical next steps
- Pick one piece and pay attention to it for a week rather than all six at once.
- Write down the accusation you hear most often, and find one verse that answers it.
