Many want to be a disciple of Jesus Christ — have you ever considered the price to pay?
Luk 14:25-33 Now great multitudes went with Him; and He turned and said to them: Luk 14:26 If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father, mother, wife, children, brothers, sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple. Luk 14:27 And whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple. Luk 14:28 For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it — Luk 14:29 lest, after he has laid the foundation, and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, Luk 14:30 saying, This man began to build and was not able to finish. Luk 14:31 Or what king, going to make war against another king, does not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? Luk 14:32 Or else, while the other is still a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks conditions of peace.
Luk 14:33 So likewise, whoever of you does not forsake all that he has cannot be My disciple.
Joh 15:18-21 If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you. Joh 15:19 If you were of the world, the world would love its own; yet because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. Joh 15:20 Remember the word that I said to you: A servant is not greater than his master. If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you; if they kept My word, they will keep yours also. Joh 15:21 But all these things they will do to you for My name's sake, because they do not know Him who sent Me.
Mat 10:34 Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth; I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. Mat 10:35 For I have come to set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; Mat 10:36 and a man's enemies will be those of his own household. Mat 10:37 He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me; he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me; Mat 10:38 and he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. Mat 10:39 He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for My sake will find it.
Mat 8:18-22 When Jesus saw great multitudes about Him, He gave a command to depart to the other side. Mat 8:19 Then a scribe came and said to Him, Teacher, I will follow You wherever You go. Mat 8:20 And Jesus said to him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head. Mat 8:21 Then another of His disciples said to Him, Lord, let me first go and bury my father. Mat 8:22 But Jesus said to him, Follow Me, and let the dead bury their own dead.
Mat 10:16-25 Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves; therefore be wise as serpents and harmless as doves. Mat 10:17 But beware of men, for they will deliver you up to councils, and scourge you in their synagogues; Mat 10:18 and you will be brought before governors and kings for My sake, as a testimony to them and to the Gentiles. Mat 10:19 But when they deliver you up, do not worry about how or what you should speak; for it will be given to you in that hour what you should speak; Mat 10:20 for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father who speaks in you. Mat 10:21 Now brother will deliver up brother to death, and a father his child; and children will rise up against parents and cause them to be put to death. Mat 10:22 And you will be hated by all for My name's sake, but he who endures to the end will be saved. Mat 10:23 When they persecute you in this city, flee to another; for truly I say to you, you will not have gone through the cities of Israel before the Son of Man comes. Mat 10:24 A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master. Mat 10:25 It is enough for the disciple that he be like his teacher, and the servant like his master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more will they call those of his household!
Mat 5:9-12 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. Mat 5:10-12 Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Mat 5:11 Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely, for My sake. Mat 5:12 Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
2 Timothy 3:12 And indeed all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.
Juan 16:2-4 They will put you out of the synagogues; yes, the time is coming that whoever kills you will think he is offering a service to God. 3 And they will do this because they have not known the Father, nor Me. 4 But these things I have told you, that when the hour comes, you may remember that I told you of them. And these things I did not say to you at the beginning, because I was with you.
Mat 5:44-48 But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, Mat 5:45 that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. Mat 5:46 For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? Mat 5:47 And if you greet your brethren only, what do you do more than others? Do not even the Gentiles do so? Mat 5:48 Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.
In summary, to be a disciple of Jesus Christ:
- We must be willing to lose everything for love of Jesus Christ.
We will be persecuted
- We will be rejected, criticized, slandered, and despised.
- Even our own family will become our enemy.
- They will wish death upon us and believe they are doing God a favor.
- Many of us will go to prison.
Now that you know the price to pay, are you willing to pay that price? Have you decided in your heart to put the Lord Jesus Christ first and give Him priority even above your own life?
If your answer is yes, blessed are you, because for those of you who with all your heart choose to love God above all things and keep His word to the end, yours is the kingdom of heaven.
