- A Disciple of Jesus Christ Bears Much Fruit
1) What does it mean to be a Disciple of Jesus Christ?
A disciple is a person who has given up everything for Christ. A disciple lives out, keeps, and is faithful to the teachings of Jesus Christ. A disciple keeps the commandments of Jesus Christ. A disciple is an imitator, someone who seeks to be like their teacher. A disciple does the same work Christ did, which includes healing and casting out demons in His name.
With this definition, if we know the commandments Jesus Christ gave, if we know His teachings and the work the Lord did, we can recognize who is a disciple of Jesus Christ and who is a disciple of a religion or denomination.
2) Disciples base their doctrine on the teachings of Jesus Christ
We disciples are Christ-centered. We love the whole Word of God, and we read and use all of Scripture, but our focus — where we place greater emphasis, greater weight, and where we base our doctrine — is the teachings of Jesus Christ.
Matthew 28:19-20 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And I assure you that I will be with you always, even to the end of the age.
Mark 16:14-20 (the Lord used this passage to awaken my soul and begin opening my eyes to the religiosity and disobedience in today's church, in apostasy).
Mark 16:14 Finally He appeared to the eleven themselves as they sat at the table, and He rebuked their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they had not believed those who had seen Him after He had risen. 15 And He said to them: Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. 16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. 17 And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; 18 they will take up serpents, and if they drink anything deadly, it will not hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.
The Ascension
19 So then, after the Lord had spoken to them, He was received up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God. 20 And they went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word through the accompanying signs. Amen.
3) We disciples are sober and watchful, gentle but shrewd — we know there are many false ministers. We are not part of ecumenism
2 John 1:9-11 Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the teaching of Christ does not have God. He who abides in the teaching has both the Father and the Son. 10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house nor greet him; 11 for he who greets him shares in his evil deeds.
Matthew 7:15-20 Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves. Matthew 7:16 You will know them by their fruits. Do people gather grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? Matthew 7:17 Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. Matthew 7:18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. Matthew 7:19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Matthew 7:20 Therefore by their fruits you will know them.
Matthew 7:21-23 Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. Matthew 7:22 Many will say to Me in that day, 'Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?' Matthew 7:23 And then I will declare to them: I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness.
1 Timothy 4:1-5 Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, 2 speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron, 3 forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from foods which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. 4 For every creature of God is good, and nothing is to be refused if it is received with thanksgiving; 5 for it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.
2 Corinthians 6:14-15 Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? 15 And what accord has Christ with Belial? Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever?
4) True disciples serve according to the will of God
Matthew 6:24 No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and riches.
Matthew 4:10 Then Jesus said to him: Away with you, Satan! For it is written, 'You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.'
Mark 10:45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.
Romans 9:12 it was said to her: The older shall serve the younger.
5) Disciples of Jesus Christ are disciples of Him, not of a denomination or a man
Luke 7:18-19 The disciples of John reported to him concerning all these things. Luke 7:19 And John, calling two of his disciples to him, sent them to Jesus, asking: Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another?
John 9:28 Then they reviled him and said: You are His disciple, but we are disciples of Moses.
Mark 2:18 The disciples of John and of the Pharisees were fasting. Then they came and said to Him: Why do the disciples of John and of the Pharisees fast, but Your disciples do not fast?
6) Disciples fight the spiritual battle and make use of our weapons
Ephesians 6:11-12 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. Ephesians 6:12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.
1 Peter 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour;
2 Corinthians 10:3-6 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. 4 For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, 5 casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, 6 and being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled.
7) Disciples do the work Jesus Christ did — to heal, deliver, and preach the kingdom of heaven
John 14:12 Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father.
Acts 10:38-39 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him. 39 And we are witnesses of all things which He did both in the land of the Jews and in Jerusalem, whom they killed by hanging on a tree.
Luke 9:1-2 Then He called His twelve disciples together and gave them power and authority over all demons, and to cure diseases. Luke 9:2 He sent them to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.
Luke 10:17-19 Then the seventy returned with joy, saying: Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name. Luke 10:18 And He said to them: I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. Luke 10:19 Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.
Matthew 10:7-8 And as you go, preach, saying, 'The kingdom of heaven is at hand.' 8 Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons. Freely you have received, freely give.
8) A disciple of Jesus Christ bears much fruit
John 15:8 By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples.
